Labor Member for Yerrabi, Suzanne Orr MLA today announced the ACT Government’s $50,000 sponsorship commitment to the Orange Sky Laundry Service, providing a portable washing service to those facing homelessness here in the ACT.
“I am delighted to announce the ACT Government’s $50,000 sponsorship of Orange Sky Laundry, which will sponsor five chairs within their Canberra service. This sponsorship will also contribute to the cost of washing powder and electricity for the service,” Ms Orr said.
“Orange Sky Laundry is an Australian Charity that offers free laundry facilities for the homeless and those who are vulnerable and living on the bottom line. While their clothes are being washed, the service also provides an opportunity for these consumers to engage with others, and to have a positive, genuine conversation.
“Orange Sky Laundry provides more than washing services; they are a service that brings dignity to those in our community who are experiencing homelessness or vulnerability. It is a simple service, but one filled with deep meaning and with deep impact on those it serves.
“Evidence shows that when people are connected with their community their mental health and wellbeing improves significantly. The social inclusion element of this service ensures that homelessness does not mean a loss of humanity and connection.
“I would like to say thank you to all the Orange Sky Laundry volunteers and Service Managers, I know with this support you will do great things to help support those experiencing homeless here in the ACT,” Ms Orr said.
Orange Sky Laundry originated in Brisbane, and in under a year has expanded across Australia. On average the service washes almost 7 tonnes of laundry every week, but more importantly the Orange Sky volunteers engage in 1300 hours of conversation with those using the service.
