Media Release: A new playground and more greenspace in the heart of Gungahlin

24 July 2019

Work is underway for a new playground and more greenspace on the central median of Gungahlin Place.

Member for Yerrabi, Suzanne Orr, on behalf of Minister for City Services Chris Steel, said the new playground was aimed at children of all ages and the upgrades to Gungahlin Place will include more trees, street furniture and landscape improvements.

“The new playground and greenspace will provide a great public area for the local community to come together, exercise and play, and will improve the overall amenity of the Gungahlin Town Centre,” Ms Orr said.

“This project has a strong focus on community, and as part of this we have been working with the Gungahlin Rotary Club, who have donated $12,000 for the birds nest swing and a refurbished bench adjacent to the swing.

“I also ran a petition calling for more green spaces for Gungahlin Place which received hundreds of signatures and a lot of enthusiastic feedback, so I’m pleased that this investment from the ACT Government will deliver on my commitment for more greenspaces in our Town Centre.”

The playground has been designed to complement the existing playground and to also cater for a younger age group. The equipment includes a birds nest swing, stepping stones, stepping stumps, walking planks, a drum kit, talking tubes and totem poles.

The playground will be surfaced with rubber softfall and will be surrounded with trees and garden beds, contained by a fence adjacent to the existing road.

The works will also include new turf and a new bike rack shelter installed on site, with all works expected to be completed by late 2019. The existing playground will be closed during the works.
