A new fenced dog park in Franklin is a step closer with construction getting underway.

“I am excited to see the Franklin Dog Park become a reality, the Community has shaped this park and I was pleased to work together to deliver my community design brief back in 2021, where 656 residents provided their input into what our park should include”.

“The community design brief I presented to the Minister helped to inform the indicative design and help secure the provision of dog poo bag dispensers, bins facilities and a park design that has as much open space as possible”.

“Following the Governments additional consultation with the community in late 2022, we are very excited to see construction getting underway to deliver Canberra’s eighth dog park and the third here in Gungahlin,” said Yerrabi MLA Suzanne Orr.

“We heard from the community that they wanted space for dogs to run free and a variety of terrains for dogs to explore.”

“Canberra has one of the highest rates of pet ownership in the country and the Labor Government is committed to providing places for locals to exercise and socialise our four-legged friends off-leash.”

Fenced dog exercise areas contribute to the effective management of dogs in public spaces by providing controlled space where dogs can freely exercise and play. They also assist in alleviating the pressure on shared recreational areas.

“We’re also planting 48 new trees for canopy cover, which once matured will provide additional shade for users of the dog park,” said Yerrabi MLA Michael Pettersson.

“Major works are expected to take approximately 9 months to complete (weather permitting). This means Gungahlin dog owners should be able to enjoy their new dog park next summer.”

“There is plenty more to look forward to in our public open spaces where our dogs can join us for on-leash walks. This includes improvements to the Tuggeranong foreshore which are nearly complete and upgrades to the Lake Ginninderra path circuit and Yerrabi Pond District Park.”

“These improvements will make public access and safety better and encourage the community to spend more time in public spaces with family and friends.”

“We look forward in joining the community at this wonderful addition to Franklin in the near future”.
