Canberra’s third community battery powers up

03 March 2026

The Albanese Labor Government is driving down energy costs and boosting grid reliability for Canberrans by switching on the latest community battery in the territory’s inner north

The 450kWh Dickson community battery, co-funded, built and managed by Evoenergy in partnership with the ACT government, will power up Dickson homes.

The Dickson community battery will help more households share in cheaper, cleaner energy and strengthening the local grid reliability as more rooftop solar comes online.

This battery joins community batteries in Casey and Fadden, following an investment of $1.5 million from the Albanese Government in batteries across the ACT, forming a growing network of neighbourhood-scale energy storage solutions.

The Community Batteries for Household Solar program is delivering 400 community batteries across Australia, making our energy system fairer and ensuring more Aussies can reap the rewards from cheaper renewables, regardless of if they have solar or not, are renters or homeowners.

Community batteries drive down electricity costs and boost reliability by absorbing excess rooftop solar during the day and feeding it back to the grid at night. They can also avoid costly upgrades to the electricity network’s pole and wires.

Quotes attributable to ACT Chief Minister, Andrew Barr:

“The installation of the final neighbourhood battery in Dickson is a major milestone in strengthening Canberra’s clean electricity network and delivering the infrastructure our growing city needs.

“Alongside the Williamsdale grid scale battery, which is now under construction, the Big Canberra Battery program is unlocking significant economic opportunities for the Territory.

“The Big Canberra Battery project continues to support local jobs across construction, engineering and the renewable energy supply chain. It is generating long term economic value for the Territory while ensuring Canberrans continue to benefit from a reliable, affordable and equitable electricity network as we transition to net zero emissions.”

Quotes attributable to Senator for the ACT, Katy Gallagher:

“Australia is a world leader in solar power and Canberrans have led the way in using more of the cheapest, cleanest form of energy in renewables”

“The Albanese Labor Government is delivering on our commitment of three community batteries across the ACT, including in Dickson, enabling more Canberra households to share in the benefits of solar power in their homes.”

Quotes attributable to Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Chris Bowen:

“The Albanese Government is helping build a cleaner, more resilient energy system for Canberrans, putting downward pressure on household electricity costs and supporting the clean energy transition.

“No matter your household’s solar or battery status, our Community Batteries for Household Solar program is making our energy system fairer for all Australians and allowing everyone to reap the benefits of our abundant renewable energy.”

Quotes attributable to ACT Minister for Climate Change, Environment, Energy and Water, Suzanne Orr:

“The ACT has been powered by 100% renewable electricity since 2020, but clean generation alone is not enough to meet the challenges ahead.

“Neighbourhood batteries such as the one here in Dickson act as local energy buffers - capturing excess rooftop solar during the day, releasing it during the evening peak, and enabling more households to install solar without the need for expensive network upgrades.”

Quotes attributable to Member for Canberra, Alicia Payne:

"Canberrans understand the importance of transitioning to renewable energy and I’m proud Labor is supporting us to use more of it.”

“This battery will enable more households to access energy from rooftop solar and to store more of the solar energy we’re already generating."

"I was proud to campaign for this community battery in Dickson and am looking forward to more of these batteries coming online around the nation."
