The ACT Government has launched the new Communities Climate Action Grants Program to empower local groups to take practical, community-led action on climate change.
A total of $300,000 has been committed over two years to fund projects of up to $30,000, supporting initiatives that reduce emissions and help communities adapt to climate impacts.
The grants are open to wide range of charitable and not-for-profit organisations, including schools; social, sporting and recreational groups; arts organisations; and cultural groups.
Minister for Climate Change, Environment, Energy and Water Suzanne Orr said the new grants program recognises the critical role community organisations play in driving meaningful climate action across the Territory.
“Canberrans are already leading the way on climate action, and the new grants will help bring their ideas, energy and local knowledge to life,” Minister Orr said.
“By supporting grassroots initiatives, we can reduce emissions, build resilience, support adaptation and help Canberrans prepare for the impacts of a changing climate.
“Whether it's helping people save energy, reduce waste, travel more sustainably or stay safe during heatwaves and extreme weather, these grants will support actions that make a real difference in everyday lives.
“We want to see projects that are practical, affordable and led by the community, for the community. Initiatives that tackle key sources of emissions like transport, or help communities become climate ready, will be strongly considered.”
Eligible projects may include workshops on sustainable travel or energy-saving behaviours, repair and composting demonstrations, education on switching from gas to electric appliances, or initiatives that improve community preparedness, such as installing shade in shared spaces, improving air filtration, or developing local emergency response plans.
“This new program builds on what worked well with the now-concluded Community Zero Emissions Grants, which focused solely on reducing emissions, and expands our approach to meet future climate challenges,” said Minister Orr.
“It allows us to fund more projects, reach more communities, and support actions that deliver both emissions reductions and climate resilience, including adaptation initiatives to make Canberra climate-ready.”
Applications for the first round of the Communities Climate Action Grants close on Sunday 15 March 2026.
